Best Practices
At GM Dental we advise all our patients to have Regular Hygiene visits to keep your teeth and gums healthy. It is recommended to have the basic “Airflow” Or “Scale & Polish” every 6 months. It is the best way to reach a continuous healthy smile by having regular visits for Airflow or Scale & Polish sessions.
It is important to keep track of your oral health, these sessions can be a way to recognise and avoid any future problems on your mouth.
Some of the most common problems that affect your oral health can be cavities (tooth decay), gum (periodontal) disease, and oral cancer. It is estimated more than 40% of adults reporting discomfort or pain in their mouth within the last 12 months, and more than 80% of people had at least one cavity by age 34.
If you visit regularly your dentist for Hygiene and take good care of your teeth and mouth regularly, this will reduce the chances of having any oral issues. Also by doing this you will save money and keep your mouth healthy with a longlasting smile.
Prevention
Here are some preventive tips:
- Quit Smoking – Smoking can impact negatively several parts on your body, regarding the mouth, smoking will recede your gums, stain your teeth, can create grey-white ulcers than eventually can become cancerous. The chemicals on tobacco can also kill the genes that protect you against cancer.
- Consume Alcohol in Moderation – The Alcohol influences your body and it can destroy your cancer defences in your organism. It is statistic proved, people who consume more than 3.5 alcoholic drinks per day increase their risk of oral cavity cancers two to three times, according to the National Institutes of Health. Most of the alcoholic drinks will also stain your teeth.
- See your Dentist or Hygienist Regularly (This doesn’t count meeting them for a coffee or meeting them at the supermarket) As we mentioned previously, this check-ups will help you keep on track of your oral health.
Oral Cancer Symptoms
In most of the cases, the warning signs of throat or mouth cancers are:
- Sores in the mouth that don’t heal
- Bleeding in the mouth that lasts more than a week
- Slow-growing lumps in the mouth or neck
- Dramatic voice changes, especially in smokers
- Persistent earaches in both ears
- Numbness of the lower lip and chin
If you have any of these symptoms, please see your dentist as soon as possible. “If it is cancer, the earlier it’s diagnosed, the better the chance we can successfully treat it.”
