How To Take Care of Sensitive Teeth

Do you suffer from Sensitive Teeth? What is Sensitive Teeth?

If you experience pain with hot or cold foods when you brush or floss your teeth, you may have a common problem called dentin hypersensitivity or sensitive teeth. This usually happens at the gum line or chewing surfaces of a tooth, it can also happen when gum tissue is receding around the tooth or the enamel is worn away, resulting in dentin becoming exposed.

What are the Main Causes of Sensitive Teeth?

Worn tooth enamel or exposed tooth nerves due to receding gums caused by strong brushing or gum disease. When heat, cold or pressure touches these nerves, you feel pain, hypersensitivity near the gum line and occasionally discomfort. Other causes are cavities, fractured teeth or a cracked tooth.

How to Treat Sensitive Teeth?

If sensitivity is caused by a cavity, a filling will typically fix the problem. Depending on the extension of the crack, either a crown or root canal treatment with a crown is necessary. If the sensitivity is caused by receding gums, To help reduce discomfort, your dentist may recommend a toothpaste for sensitive teeth, desensitizing toothpaste contain potassium. Potassium help desensitize your teeth to hot and cold liquids or foods by decreasing the excitability of the nerves in your teeth. Sometimes, the dentist may choose to use a sealer to “seal” the sensitive teeth.

Sensitive teeth can be treated. Discuss with your dentist at your next dental visit!
